Vehicle Warranty Sales Pitch

I recently purchased a certified used car with a manufacturer's warranty. The other day in the mail, I received a little, yellow postcard with an urgent message, "WARRANTY NOTIFICATION, IMPORTANT VEHICLE WARRANTY INFORMATION," It had my name, address, an "owner identification number", vehicle make, with a toll-free number to call (1-888-898-8778). It seemed like a legitimate notification, perhaps relating to a recall notice or something similar. What I did not notice was the return address printed in small type: Great Atlantic Warranty, Inc., 101 North Riverside Drive, Suite 210, Pompano Beach, FL 33062. So I picked up the phone and spoke to a woman who was less than courteous who told me, "You're driving without a warranty." I said, "Uhm, but I already have a warranty." She continued to argue with me that I needed to renew my warranty which doesn't expire until next year. After going back and forth I eventually figured out that this wasn't my car manufacturer, but another cheese-ball company trying to get me to buy their warranty. How did they get my information? Obviously, from my friendly neighborhood dealership my state's Department of Transportation. Thanks guys for keeping my information private.

When I called back to request that my information be removed, a man answered the phone and when I requested that he remove my personal information and not share it with any third party, he cut me off mid-sentence, and then hung up. So I called back and got the same guy. I asked him why I was disconnected and he said, "Uh, we must have gotten disconnected." Hhmm. These folks are really professional. The next time I get one of these in the mail, I'll check the return address more thoroughly.

UPDATE (7/6/06) - This post has turned into a useful thread of comments by a lot of great users who have posted additional updated information about these shady vehicle warranty companies. I recently moved and changed the address on my registered vehicles. I received another card from a similar company. When I called to have my name and address removed, the rep said, "Okay, thanks for calling," and hung up on me, without even asking for my information. I called back and got a different rep and was able to have him remove my information. See the helpful comments below from other folks.

UPDATE (10/18/06) - I received a notice from Dealer Services, 100 Mall Parkway, Wentzville, MO 63385 (800-607-5426) with a "final notice" that I had 72 hours to extend the factory warranty coverage on my vehicle which is already covered by a Honda warranty. They had an opt-out line (800-699-7710) shown at the bottom of the letter where you can request to be removed from their mailing list.

UPDATE (5/10/11) - Just got a very official looking notice from MOTOR VEHICLE DIVISION, 866-503-4680, "administered by American Auto Shield, LLC."

  2. I bought a used car from John Elway Toyota and I've gotten a couple of these scam cards. Isn't there a privacy act that the dealership is supposed to follow?

  3. I believe what happens is that the vehicle registration information (vehicle make, model, year, etc.) and the owner's name are public information that anyone can access. It's a pretty sneaky way to find out who owns what car and what their address is, etc. Then, they know what the normal factory warranty periods are and they contact you telling you that "you are driving without a warranty". Just shred the postcards.

  4. Brian,
I recieved one of those yellow cards and tried all week to get in touch with them and finally I gave up, then I went to the internet and I read your article and immediately I ripped it to shreds with high emotions!
    Thank you very much!

  5. This "cheeseball" outfit either has changed it's number or it had a second one - 800-344-2045. I did not link to your blog by the number but by the company name. Maybe this post will help others link here.

    Thanks.

  6. Thank you for providing this info. You helped very much! I too received one yesterday. I have a 5 year warranty on my used Toyota Corrola. Take it easy.

  7. Thanks for the info, glad I checked google before I called. I thought it sounded fishy when it was called a "warranty notification" and not a recall. The little yellow card in filed in the wastecan. Thanks a million.

  8. My Grandmother got one of these in the mail. I thought it was probably a scam or a sales pitch of some sort, so I plugged the phone number into Google and found your post. Thanks. (How did we ever live without Google?)

  9. i bought a used 02 bmw and received the same notification. Took an extra step and purchased the so called warranty. Terms were; either i pay the whole $2000 or 25% down and a monthly premium.Took the second option. few days later i received the package but didn't like the terms and condition at all. called them to cancel and adviced i fax them some info. Didn't hear from them for 20dys. tried to call them only to find the prior # disconected.I guess i have to pursue other options now. I'd advice everybody out there to stay clear.

  10. Thanks for the useful posts. I got the yellow card today. It seems like they change their name to "Authorized Dealer Services". Anyway, thanks for the blog! It saves me time and money.

  11. They also have the # 866-578-3316 and go by "Choice One Warranty". I'm sure they go by many other names and have many different (revolving?) telephone numbers.

  14. Thank You for your blog and all of the comments!

I am leary of any unsolicited mail from FL. It's scam central, had a problem years ago with a "magazine soliciter" from Ft. Lauderdale.

Recently I have received three of these yellow cards from Choice One Warr. Boca Raton/West Palm Beach, 866-578-3316.

NOTE: Unless the Card says "RECALL" and has the MFR name & address it's probably bogus.

  15. I also got a yellow card and through an ensueing conversation, I was led to believe that my dealership was scamming me on an extended warranty. Just makes me feel that its hard to trust anybody these days. Thanks for posting your blog and giving me something to think about before I spend more $.

    ReplyDelete
  16. This was obviously a marketing offer, but was their warranty extension price even worth considering? I don't mind extending my warranty if the deal is good, but it sounds like these guys were probably selling (or trying to sell) the extention for much more than it's worth too. Is that the case?

    ReplyDelete
  17. Thanks!!! Now I don't have to call these scummy creeps. All we DON'T need is to have a sales pitch disguised as a legit concern - I too thought it was a recall or something "official" but couldn't find out via cartalk or edmunds.com - thank you for your blog!

  18. Got a yellow card today from 'Authorized Dealer Services'. I called my Honda dearership first and they knew nothing about the company or the offer. I then googled and found this blog. Thank you. I chose to keep this card on file to make a report of some kind in the future. Consumers can help stop this fraudulent activity.

  19. Hi! I received today a white postcard with the info: "Important Vehicle Notification" printed on it. It had an Owner Identification Number, the words "Dated Material Deliver Immediately" printed on it, and the year and make of my vehicle. It then had printed on it my name and address. This was all on the front of the white card. Up in the left hand corner it said it came from "Vehicle Notification Department Electronic Processing Center".

On the back of tthe card it had the phone number: 1-800-376-7044; and it had the days and times to call - Monday thru Friday 9 am to 7 pm EST, and it said "If you have difficulty getting through, we may be experiencing a high volume of calls. Keep trying or call back after 11 am EST". I kid you not, it said "call back after 11 am EST" which is during the time they have high volume of calls!

Well, stupid me called the number before I realized all of this, and before I found this site! I got a lady, and I immediately asked her what this is about. She proceeded to say that she needed my Owner ID Number and make and model and year of my vehicle. When I told her I wasn't giving out any info until she told me more about who and what her company is, and what this is about, she said "We sent *you* the card! Give me the Owner ID number, and year, make, and model of your car!" I then I realized I was about to be scammed, and I said "Ooh, this must be a scam! Because you're refusing to tell me who and what your company is!", and she said, "Ooh, okay, bye!" and she hung up on me! She was really nasty! I believe I was about to be scammed!

Has anyone here received the white card I'm talking about? I do believe it was a scam! Hopefully, no one else will even consider calling the number like I unfortunately did!

  20. My parents are older and they received these cards and called a few times before saying to me "we have a recall on the car but can't get a hold of anyone".

  22. Just got the white card -- exactly the same as described above -- phone 800-376-7044. I work for the news media -- so I'm going to call from work and have a little chat. I suspected it was a scam the minute it arrived. Mail fraud is illegal -- perhaps we should all notify the post office of the problem.

  23. Oh... if you want to notify the post office, go to www.usps.com, contact us, email us... you can fill out the form online.

  25. Yet another one here... Red "IMPORTANT VEHICLE NOTIFICATION" stripe at the top... with "Classification: FINAL NOTICE" in red letters. Real nice, but no cigar. It came from Ft. Lauderdale FL on permit no. 792- if that has anything to do with the company maybe someone can track them??

    ReplyDelete
  26. I got the white card today and decided to plug this number in as the return had no actual name or address. Thanks for the info. I can now toss it. I am for the news media looking into this. Sounds like fraud.

  29. I just received "my yellow card" yesterday and I too was alarmed at first glance, that perhaps my vehicle was in recall or something was wrong with the 2-year warranty I took when I purchased the car just 2 months ago. I called the number and after talking several seconds with the unprofessional, realized that this was nothing more than an advertising pitch and immediately asked him to remove my information from his database. I also added that I do not want any further communication from him. He resisted and finally told me he had to transfer me to the person who was in charge of that area. I then went into a voice mailbox, and the person sounded just like the guy I spoke to. I was quite annoyed at this point, so you can imagine the anger in the message I left him to remove my information. One thing I did note though is that the name of the company has now become "Choice One Warranty", and the address is a PO Box in Boca Raton. The PO Box box should have been my first clue. However, same phone number as I have read in other comments. So, they must move from address to address pretty quickly.

To add further, after that annoyance, what do I receive today, another "card"! This time a white one from the company, Warranty Services in Scottsdale, AZ, phone 1.800.324.3559. I immediately called them and read them the riot act too. And on this card, it had the description of my vehicle, an owner ID number, and of course, my name and address. So, if this card had gotten in the wrong hands, anyone could have "signed me up for a warranty", or found out other pertinent information that is private!

I agree, where does the "privacy act" fall into place here? It's really really scary to think there's nothing we can do except throw these cards out. That doesn't fix the problem that my name is in some database out there.

  30. Your dealer did not sell you out, and no it is not a scam. The company is legitimate, and even listed with a satisfactory record by the Better Business Bureau www.bbb.com. Who sold you out was your state DOT (dept of transportation) who has your current address, vehicle info and such, and YES, they DO sell that information to other sources, as well as report to manufacturers any changes in ownership and address for safety recalls. I'm not saying this company is offering any exceptional deal on a warranty, but they are legit. They offered a powertrain warranty only, which cost more than an engine replacement in my car. Like I said, not a good deal, but they are a legitimate business.

    ReplyDelete
  31. Very good point. It is true that these companies obtained your (and my) information through the Department of Transportation with which you register your vehicle. I'm not sure if this info is public record, or if it is simply sold. It would be nice to find a way to opt-out from this info sharing with the DOT. Yes these companies are "legitimate", even though they may have bad reputations and use shady or deceptive marketing tactics. Additionally, they are typically less than helpful and rude when you call to have your name removed or when you call to ask for more information, which further adds to the negative image these companies have. Or perhaps it's just the representative you happen to speak to.

Unfortunately, it's not just your vehicle registration information that gets abused, but anyone who has purchased a home will tell you of the never-ending flood of annoying, unsolicited offers you receive (read about my recent experience).

  32. Thanks Folks, as a fairly recent widow,I am up to my knees in real problems, so I really don't need this kind of solocitation. I, too, had bought a new car with a three year warranty...a pox on the DOT.

  34. Update from my first msg left Fri Jul 14, 11:29:31 AM CDT ..

I started thinking about this further regarding my personal info being so easily accessible and suddenly felt the need to file a complaint with the US Postal Service. I included the permit numbers on the card and any other pertinent information I felt would assist them in stopping this type of advertising. I suggested that they should check out these companies BEFORE allowing a permit number to see exactly what they will be mailing out. I know there is a huge lawsuit going on regarding these "YOU'RE A WINNER" Reward Centers that are also misleading people by making them believe they won a sweepstake. Bottom line, I received a response back that they have received my complaint and it's on it's way for review. That was a week ago. I think we should do everything we can to secure our identities because I think it's only going to get worse. I'll keep you posted if I get any other responses.

  36. I have a pretty blue card. There may be more to this than warranty sales scams. Do any of you have credit problems? I have read that some collection agencies stoop this low to try to alarm you or a loved one so you call them. So now they have your phone number now and by means of the mail piece itself, confirmed your mailing address. This info will be used by them to harass you and/or friends and relatives to attempt to collect debts that may be as old as 7 years or more. I suggest we handle junk mail the same as we do e-mail. If we don't know who really sent it, trash it.

    ReplyDelete
  37. I just received a similar card, sent from Vehicle Notification Department / Electronic Prcessing Center(yeah right!) and the address was Ft. Lauderdale, FL. On the back it had the 1-800-376-7044 phone number.

  38. I wanted to see what lengths these guys would go to, so I asked the rep. for more information. I asked if he could provide the top ten warranty defects for my vehicle, with the mean time between failure, the time to first failure, and average cost of repair for each, by geographic region... all to help me make 'a more informed decision.' The guy replied, "I'll get back to you." Awesome! I love it when THEY want to hang up on ME!

  39. I received the yellow AND white cards in the mail roughly at the same time. The yellow card's phone # led me to this post, when I googled the company's name (Choice One Warranty) it led me to a one-page website without information.
The white card's # came up 'unknown' but the company's name (First National Dealer Services) led me to a VERY fancy website, very legit looking with all of their info a click away. So...my guess is, is that there are agencies that are real and there are people trying to make money off of the good people that are out there.
Also, both cards were issued for "FORD" models. Both cards came from FL and both cards ended up in the trash ;)

  41. Received the same "white card" with the 1-800-376-7044 number. Was sent to my wife with the "wrong vehicle" in red print on the front. Does this mean DOT doesn't know what vehicle or vehicles we own........thought that was interesting!

My yellow card came from Vehicle Notification Dept. which I googled since they were closed when I got the card. The phone number is different for mine which is 800-231-8748. Googling that phone number gave me their site (not listed on their card) which is http://www.fndealerservices.com/. Their site states...
"First National Dealer Services is a division of First National Warranty. First National Warranty is one of the largest providers of top rated Vehicle Service Contracts (commonly referred to as extended warranty’s) in the country."
    Nope, sorry! Don't need it!

  49. Got the same card in the mail just today and my husband and I were perplexed. We know that if there are any official transactions or notifications, our dealer would be the one who would notify us, at the very least on an official letter of say, Daimler-Chrysler. This "Vehicle Notification Department" should be reported to the Better Business Bureau and dealerships should be held to account for not keeping their databases private! By the way, we're in Rochester, Minnesota so all the others who are probably receiving the same postcard, throw it away! This post was so helpful. Thanks, Brian!

    3430 E Jefferson Ave. #843
    Detroit, MI 48207

The phone number they listed was 1-800-376-7044.

It seemed fishy , stating things like "FINAL NOTICE" (it was the first) and "priority level: HIGH" with no reason or purpose stated. So I googled it like alot of you.

  58. I received the notice in the mail, I had seen others before but chose to ignore them. I found it fishy that in the letter they request you to call with your VIN and mileage (I wouldn't give them the VIN). I called tonight to check pricing and was speaking to Carlos. He gave this great sales pitch and said I was over my warranty and he went over the payment schedule and asked if I wanted to pay with visa or mastercard. I asked him how did I know they were a reputable company (as I was googling their information and came up with this page). He again went into a long sales pitch and ranted over the company being in business since the 80's. He stated they are under Warren Tech in Texas-which I couldn't find any records for. When I told him I couldn't afford the payments he laid out, he got his manager on the phone and he lowered the total cost by $300 automatically. I asked him how that was possible. He stated because I said I couldn't afford it, it was his job to make it affordable-very fishy!!! When I told him that I wasn't interested because I talked with my husband (lie), he proceeded to get beligerent and asked me whose car it was. He stated that shouldn't I be able to make the decisions? He proceeded get more obtrusive and stated it was funny how I had agreed to the warranty cost and now I wasn't. I told him I wasn't interested and I also found information on the internet about the company and he was to remove my information from his mailing list. I then I hung up. I called my dealer after and he stated that it was a scam and my warranty is still on my vehicle. DESTROY ALL NOTICES FROM THIS COMPANY AND ITS AFFILIATES. :)

  65. Brian,
My elderly parents received a white postcard with bright red lettering. It happened to come on the same day that they received their license renewal sticker, so they thought the card was from our state department of transportation. Fortunately, they mentioned it to me, and several red flags emerged: the listed vehicle is no longer owned by them; the return address is for Cleveland, OH, while they live in Illinois; and the 1-800-376-7044 phone number is in the eastern standard time zone, but they are in the central time zone. I checked this blog, and I am so glad I did. Thank you so much!

  67. Got two cards today from Auto One Warranty Specialists in Irvine, CA but with different phone numbers 1-888-978-7707 and 1-800-978-4146. Interestingly, we also got an automated telephone call about an expired warranty, and we were asked to press "1" immediately. I hung up, but this seems like a new wrinkle in this scam.

  71. Glad I searched and found this site on Google...I too received a "FINAL WARRANTY NOTICE" from Auto One Warranty Services of Irvine Ca. Their number is 1-888-978-7706. "FINAL" is mentioned 4X!! My car is 6 years old and I have moved 4 times in 3 States since '01 so they are obviously getting information from the departments of vehicles, not the dealers.

    Junk mail!

  72. I got a postcard that in the mail on June 23, 2007 that had on the front of it: "IMPORTANT MOTOR VEHICLE NOTIFICATION". Since I already purchased an extended coverage plan through my local dealer, I wondered why I was getting this card concerning my 2007 Ford (no make or model specified). I "Googled" the 800-376-7044 number on the postcard. I found your article titled "Vehicle Warranty Sales Pitch" and read the article and the comments posted. After that, I realized this was another "auto warranty scam". This one I received has a return address of: "Motor Vehicle Notification Department, Electronic Processing Center." It was mailed from Cleveland, OH on permit #3097. There was no company name anywhere on the postcard. It had the usual stuff: Call 1-800-376-7044 Monday-Friday 9AM-5PM Eastern Standard Time. This notice applied to all vehicle types and it was a final notice. Let the buyer beware... Anything that comes in on a postcard or what you see on an "illegal road sign" is likely to be a scam.

  75. Hi, you can add me to the list. I received a brown, very offical looking envelope today. From Dealer Services, Warranty Notification Department, 100 Mall Parkway, Wentzville, MO 63385.
Inside, a very professional looking letter with a Final Notice Warning, listing my Vehicle year and make. Phone # to call: 1-800-607-8786, telling me I had 72 hours to call. What got my attention was, they indicated that my factory warranty was due to expire.
I then realized that my factory warrenty expired several years ago. I had purchased a extended warrenty from the dealer at time of purchase and it has not expired.
I did a Google search for the company and address and arrived at your link. I had already decided that it was a scam, but checked it out anyway. To be safe nowdays, we all should be very careful and think before we leap!
Anyway, I just wanted to add my 2 cents and thank you for making this type of info availble on the net. Keep up the GOOD work and happy surfing to ALL!

  76. Sep 18, 2007 - I've gotten phone calls every two or three days (got two within an hour of each other this morning) with the same pre-recorded message of "Your warranty is about to expire" and "Press 1 to be connected to a warranty specialist," "press 2 to remove your number from our call list," etc. After pressing 2 on a number of calls, I started pressing 1 to get to a person and asking them to remove my number - which almost always got me thrown over to the "How to register on the Government Do-Not-Call List" (“Gov D-N-C”). Finally, with the first call this morning, I asked what the name of the company was and was told "Dealer Services." When I asked where they were located, I was told St. Louis. I asked then for the individual's mailing address and got flipped into the Gov D-N-C message. On the second call, I asked to speak with the individual's supervisor and immediately went to the Gov D-N-C message, never to speak with the supervisor. When I googled ""Dealer Services" warranty Missouri"," I found St. Louis Better Business Bureau press release on "Dealer Services" at http://www.stlouisbbb.org/news20070402.html describing the more than 241 complaints against the firm. I also found this website. I've reregistered my phone on the Gov D-N-C list and hopefully, they will quit harassing me.

  77. I received a post card today from Auto One Warranty Specialists 4521 Campus Drive, Ste 389 Irvine, CA 92612. On the front of the card was listed my new 2006 ISUZU with a customer ID number and a warning notice "FINAL WARRANTY NOTICE-EXPIRED VEHICLE FACTORY WARRANTY" on the front of the card.
My vehicle has only been in service for 11 months and has 9,400 miles. I called my dealer and the basic factory warranty on my new ISUZU is 36 Months/50K Miles, just as I though it was. This company is conducting very misleading/deceptive advertising via the US Postal service and should be looked into. This may also fall under mail fraud, false advertising via the US Postal regulations.

  79. I believe the information that these services get a hold of comes from the D.O.T not your dealership, because I recently moved and the only ones that had my new address was the D.O.T.

I called them (Vehicle Services--the postcard scammers)and then said I wanted to call them later. They said no and that this was a one time deal. My info would be deleted at the end of the call. That's when I knew it was a scam.

  81. I too received a card in the mail this past weekend. Thinking this was affiliated with my dealership (as I had a few more days before my 30days/3000 miles on a used-certified vehicle expired), I called the number on the card. First, I spoke to "Aaron" who asked for the CID# on the card and then confirmed my name and address. He then proceeded to tell me I would have to first speak with "Adam" who would ask me some questions over the phone to determine is my car could still be covered for insurance (?). "Adam" gets on, and asks me a couple of questions like "is the vehicle running fine, have you had any problems, etc. About halfway through this nonsense I interrupt "Adam" and explain to him that my vehicle is still under the 30day/300 mile warranty, bumper to bumper, I have no problems, and the vehicle still has the Chrysler 8-80 warranty remaining on the engine and powertrain.....why is he asking me these questions? "Just a formality sir, we have to ensure your vehicle is sound" (over the phone?). He then tells me I am confirmed to proceed ("just a precaution sir") and he transfers me back to "Aaron". "Aaron" tells me I qualify for a 15% discount today, and he is willing to write me up a plan for 5 years/100K miles for $664/yr. All I need to do is make a $250 down payment with my credit card, and they will interest-free bill me for the next 18 mos. The "kicker" is I have to make a decision THAT DAY! For they allow no calls backs. I tell them to forget it, and "Aaron" tells me he will graciously allow me 24 hours and will let me call back again and enable the plan. I ask him if he is with Chrysler, and why did the Chrysler dealer give me a Chrsyler plan for a lot less money in a nice Chrsyler pamphlet with delivery of the vehicle? HE explains they are Auto One, and company that puts together service plans for buyers and they offer the best plans. But, I say; "you're not dealer or Chrsyler, how can YOU offer me a better plan? I'm not taking the car to you?".

I realize I am dealing with a couple of chuckleheads wearing call-center headsets sitting in their 4'x6' cubes filching money from unknowing consumers.

Beware- and stay away from this outfit!

I love this Auto Draft your card only 18Mo's no interest but can't bill ya on paper. The more they talked the sweeter it sounded until they could only draft you checking or credit account. I visited the real Auto One Warranty site and could not find this # 1-800-978-4145 anywhere. He got alittle upset when I said we wanted to contact our local GM dealer first about this. WATCH OUT THEY ALMOST GOT US.

  84. Just got one...since it didn't say "Honda" anywhere on it, I figured it was junk mail. I decided to google the return address out of curiosity and stumbled into this blog.

You know, the thing that bugs me is, if they simply stated who they were and what they wanted to sell, I'd be OK with it: "We're XYZ Company, and we provide car owners with extended warranties beyond their manufacturer warranty period. Give us a call, and we can keep you covered for another 3 years! Visit our website...blah, blah, blah".

Wouldn't that be better? Why do they have to pretend that they're your dealership or car manufacturer.

I always avoid people who do business this way like the plague. I don't care what they offer, or even if it's really, really good. If their sales approach is to trick me, manipulate me, and misrepresent who they are, then they're nothing but a con artist organization, and nobody should be giving them business.

    Keep ripping up these cards.

  85. Hi All - 2008 has arrived and with it the first scam of my year! I received a card with 'Important Vehicle Information' emblazoned in red across it. 'Vehicle Warranty Division Electronic Notification Center' is given as the card's origin. As you all received, this has my full name, the year and make of my car and an 'Owner ID Number'.
It seems that the phone number has changed - here's what was on my card: 1.800.724.9614. The card tells me 'US Postage Paid Mailed From Zip Code 63385 Permit No. 2'. The zip is for Wentzville, MO.
I bought my car in 2006 and paid for a full parts/labor warranty up to 36,000 miles, so I thought this was bogus. Finding this site after a quick 'google' confirmed this.
Thanks for all the posts here - I hope mine adds to helping stop someone getting scammed!

  88. Might as well enter this number into the Google search engine: 1-800-637-3935. Got my card yesterday from Vehicle Warranty Division, Recall Notification Center, zip code 63385. Postcard could not have been more cryptic, but they had my car make and model on there. My husband was foolish enough to call, waited on hold for TWENTY MINUTES, and I happened to come home just as the guy was coming on the line. He made me hold for another couple minutes while he checked to see if there were any "recalls" on my car. Then he came back on the line and tried to sell me a warranty! HA! My husband screamed at him and I told him no thanks and hung up. These are some really sleazy tactics.

  89. Once more, thanks for posting this. When there was no more descriptive company name than "Dealership Warranties" on a manilla-ish card, I figured some searching was in order. I mean, what credible company would just spam out customer information in plain view to the postal system, without even an envelope?

    My version was:

    Dealership Warranties
    12131 Dorsett Rd., #106
    Maryland Heights, MO 63043

It lists some random Owner Identification Number and the reverse says the following:

    VEHICLE SERVICE NOTIFICATION

    Dear Valued Customer:

This notification is to inform you that your factory warranty has expired or is about to expire. To avoid the high cost of automobile repairs, call us immediately with your Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) and exact miles to renew.

  90. Its pretty sad that these type of scams have gone on for years. Mine was from "VEHICLE WARRANTY DIVISION" and had the phone number 800-724-9614 on it. Its funny that each week or so when a card comes in the mail its marked "Final Notice". I wish it was the final notice so they would leave me alone. I think the authorities should get involved in such scams.

  91. "Call 1-800-637-3935"
"Important Safety Recall Information", "IMPORTANT" (BIG RED LETTERS), Region: "National", Priority Level: "High" Vehicle Type: "All" (Good grief! That'll clear out the traffic congestion problem!) Classification: "Final Notice" (in Red!) Let's consider...hmmmm...A recall notice, without any government agency name, return address, or specific vehicle information? Not very timely, considering my parent, who received the card within the last 2 weeks, owns a 20 year old car. ANOTHER 3rd party warranty pitch, to the new number reported by other bloggers this year:
    1-800-637-3935.
Mailed from zip code 63385 (Missouri) under permit#2.
Thanks to reference librarian help and your valuable blog and people's detailed comments--another gotcha! THANK YOU VERY MUCH and have a great New Year 2008!

  92. I get these all the time! I work for a dealership and I can honestly say WE DO NOT SELL OUR CUSTOMERS INFORMATION. The Department of Motor Vehicles is where these shady people get your info.

I love to call and "play" with them, since they get very upset about being asked to be removed. I think this should be illegal and outlawed. If a person wants a warranty on thier vehicle BUY FROM YOUR DEALERSHIP. I have seen SO many come in and ask about "this postcard" or "that letter". It may look like a good bargain since it could be a couple hundred cheaper than what you are offered at the dealership, but I can say this....you will PAY IN THE END!

The most recent ones I got was from 866-226-8319 and 800-724-9614 and 877-728-6040 and 800-908-7441. These are all in the month of January 2008! SAD and PATHETIC to anyone who works for such a deceptive company! SHAME ON YOU!!!

  93. I JUST GOT SCAMMED!!! Don't feel like an idiot. Most of these posters are much smarter than I am. I dealt with "DEALERSHIP WARRANTIES" out of Maryland Heights, MO. After purchasing the idiot warranty in the morning during work, I though it over after work and called to cancel. Funny enough, "my agent" had gone on vacation for the week. the following slimeball agents would not allow me to cancel. When they cut the cost in half, I knew something was up. After getting nowhere but frustrated, I called my credit card company and the charge was still pending. They were able to help me stop the charge, and issued me new numbers. A little headache unwarranted, but saved a lot in the long run. Best of luck to the rest of you "not so smart" consumers. I have definately learned my lesson!!

  98. The "Dealer Services of St Louis" have been leaving messages on my cell phone for the past 2 weeks. Their message repeatedly mentions "final warning" on vehicle warranty expiration. I finally picked up the phone today and got a very pushy sales pitch involving at least 4 different representatives in the company. Perhaps they feel that repeatedly transferring between reps makes their offer seem more legitimate?

Anyway when I asked which of my cars that this pertains to they couldn't give a direct answer simply stating "Uh... any of your cars... new or used." They have no idea of what make/model car that my warranty is about to expire? VERY shady...

I then asked how they got my information and they said they got it from the dealer database... but that begs the question if they don't know what I am driving then which dealership did they get the info from? Hmmm...

Anyway I went ahead and asked for a quote on a 5 year/100k mi plan and told them to give me their number so I could think about it and call them back. The representative got flustered and switched me to a couple of other "representatives" each one of whom gave me an increasingly more pushy sales pitch and completely REFUSED to give me a call back number. They wanted a downpayment NOW or the deal was off the table. I simply said OK. I told them that there were plenty of others offering extended warranties so I would check elsewhere. Finally they relented and gave me a number.

This company has SCAM written all over it. The argumentative attitude of the last representative that I was transferred to would turn ANYBODY off to doing business with these crooks

  110. I'm getting phone calls to my cell every day with the same warning message about an expired guarantee. The caller's id number is fake and it is always different. Today I pressed 1 to show interest in their call just to gatter more info about them. I was able to speak with somebody called Jesica who gave me a fake company name (I was online checking if the company was active in California, since she told me they were in CA). Then I was transferred to an specialist who gave me another name (slighly different from the first one). In short, the company is AUTO ONE WARRANTY SERVICES which it doesn't exist (at least in CA). Its domain name: www.autoonewarranty.com is registered under the name of a company that provides private registrations (http://www.domainsbyproxy.com) so they are not going to disclose who is the owner of this domain/company. Basically my research confirms that this company has a well articulated scam operation and from my part, I'm going to pass this info to the Attorney General in my state so they can investigate them.

  114. First off, THANK YOU GOOGLE!

I received the white postcard that read "Warranty Pre-Qualification Notification" on the top in a big red box. It too stated that I had but 72 hours to confirm.

I'm not one to fall for scams, but lo and behold I called and spoke to "Mary". Initially Mary asked for my confirmation number which I refused to give until she told me exactly what "Source One" was. She told me that she felt I had doubts about the company's validity and began to read a short passage as to what they were and how long they'd been in business-- but only AFTER she got my confirmation number. She told me my car's warranty had expired although I assured her it hadn't. Then she offered me a better deal because I was still under warranty. Then why was she so sure I wasn't covered? Obviously, she knew nothing so I took her number and told her I'd consider it. 72 hours to confirm my ass.

  115. I have been receiving these "offers" from various "warranty" companies ever since 2005 when I bought my car. I have a 5-year extended warranty on my car! It does not expire until 2010. I reported two of the companies to the Better Business Bureau (online) and that took car of them. But the cards keep coming. My mother even got one on her 1990 Escort! Geez! I shread the cards - DO NOT SIMPLY THROW THEM AWAY! Identity theft is running rampant. And do not call them. When you do, they now have yoru telephone number to give to everyone!

  116. Just received my third notice in the mail in less than two months. This one is from "Dealers Warranty" based out of St. Charles, MO located on 745 Friedens Rd. Ste 201.

What respectable company would give you a vehicle warranty OVER THE PHONE based upon verbal information you gave them?

I wish these people would go away. A scan of the web and their phone number: 888-963-6723 turns up multiple hits as scam and ripoff artists (whaddah surprise!).

  118. Today, I got a letter with big bold red letters 'FINAL WARRANTY NOTICE'. 2 weeks ago, I bought toyota 2000 yr car and already spent $500 for minor repairs. When I got this letter from someone then I was really so scared about it. Felt like I'm not supposed to run old cars without warranty. I called them and they were very curious to take this deal immediately over first call. I told them that I will get back to them but they said that they don't entertain call backs and asked me to trash the letter. I was so surprised when he asked me to trash the letter. Later, when I googled on '1-888-978-7704' phone number, I found this article and I got what I want to know. I'm glad that I didn't do any mistake. I just wanted to leave my comments here as someone may go through the same tension like I went through.

Letter doesn't have return address but it is on the name of 'ADMINISTRATIVE OFFICES - EXTENDED COVERAGE DIVISION'. BEWARE.

I was tempted to try it but decided a little online research was in order. As usual, it didn't let me down, and 2-3 links later I found this site. Thanks guys.

  122. Just received another call this afternoon from this same number in Florida.

I get these same calls from this number: 305-908-3391 for the last five years now. These people are scam artists, and sell an highy over-inflated warranty that's not even a warranty from the manufacturer. And, they are clueless as to the records they've acquired because the recent used car I purchased is still covered for another three years. They get ornery and obnoxious when you counter their claims.

PS - These idiots want you to pay by credit card too, in installments!

  123. Not all warranty companies are out to scam people. A couple minutes of research will go alot farther than a couple minutes of trash talking. Sure, there are some companies out there trying to rip the consumer off but I have found one that isn't, MVS. I can pay a reasonable fee to have my vehicle protected for 5 years or 100,000 miles and I can also get my money back if I don't end up using it. The plan covers more than a factory warranty but costs much less in the long run. Informing the public about scams is a very good thing but maybe we should try pointing out the good companies as well.

    ReplyDelete
  124. OK MR. Anonymous!!! There are No good companies out there. I owned a warranty sales company. Past tense OWNED. The reason we didn't lie, cheat, steal, or miss inform or overcharge. In the end americans dont pay bills and they think insurance is a personal bank account where depositing $299 can get an already broken transmission fixed. Even after we sold real policies to real honest customers thats when the insurance company takes over and pulls their little tricks. The only way an extended service contract is worth it is by accident. the average new car b2b (exclusionary) 5 year 100k policy costs the seller around 700-1200 and then the seller turns around and marks them up anywhere from 1000 to 2300. If its insurance based on risk then the $2300 markup pretty much ensures you will never get the money back you paid. anyone that buys a warranty that isn't trying to get an already broken car fixed(which is insurance fraud) is stupid. put your money in the bank.

  125. Kevin,

If you actually looked up extended car care you would see that there are no alleged scams with our company. You probably looked up on Ripoffreport.com "car care extended warranty" which is an actual insurance company that went out of business, there are plenty of scam reports. Anyway we did have a A- rating at the BBB until we stopped sending them money and miraculously it dropped from A- to B- with no additional complaints. Go figure. Well we are now an F rating because we are out of business. So much for trying to treat customers fairly in a business of thieves. I'm not a warranty lifer as Kevin would suggest I actually knew nothing of the industry until I signed on as CFO. I am really just an accountant. Hopefully I can personally sway everyone from ever buying any warranty from computer warranties to car. What people don't realize is how much they get marked up because of advertising costs. They are never worth it ever. I could go into a long explanation but if the actual administrators wrote decent policies and actually paid claims according to the contracts they "stand behind" then I would be all for extended service contracts. Our company did things right and we're out of business. The only way a marketer can make it in that industry is to lie, cheat and steal. This is not an opinion its a fact. If you want to put an end to these crooked companies get a class action suit against the entire industry and find everyone that ever bought and cancelled a policy. Then find out how much is actually owed as a refund vs. how much they ever received. You would immediately bankrupt every marketer and in conjunction bankrupt most of the administrators because they would have no one to sell their crappy products.

  126. Just called "Motor Vehicle Services" locasted in Florida after reciving a warranty notice (phone # 1-866-238-6239). I was checking to see if the company was legit by checking with the Better Business Bureau. I simply asked for the correct name and address of the company. The man said "I'm not sure, what do you need the address for?" Owning a business for 30+ years, our address was never a secret!

  127. I just came across this website when I received my notice from Dealership Warranties. How many people go on line every time and write something good about a company? Usually not that many. Even the fortune 500 companies don't even get that response on line. If they do it's for marketing reasons. It's a shame that websites like this give companies a bad name. What people should do is talk to their dealerships and asks questions to the company before buying something. 3/4 of the people on here probably bought the warranty without asking questions or understanding what they are buying. I'm not saying that this is a good or bad company, but people need to do resource before buying anything. I have been in the telemarketing business for 22 years and know that customers think one and get another because they just assume what they are buying. It's understandable because they aren't sitting there looking at the product or contract. They don't ask questions. Keep that in mind when you buy anything. I'm going to call them and see what they have to offer because I'm interested. I know that I don't have to buy what they offer me, but will ask questions before I buy.

    ReplyDelete
  128. What you people buying "extended warranties" from either the dealer or a third party marketer is this. There is an actual cost to the warranty which the insurance company charges the dealership or marketer which includes administration fees as well as the risk of having to pay claims. Then YOUR DEALER YES YOUR DEALER MARKS UP THE ACTUAL COST BY A MINIMUM OF $1000. ANYONE WHO BUYS ONE OF THESE CONTRACTS IS NAIVE TO THINK THEY ARE ACTUALLY BUYING PROTECTION FOR COSTS IN THE FUTURE.

95% OF PEOPLE WILL NOT GET REPAIRS THAT EXCEED THE PRICE THEY PAID FOR THEIR SERVICE CONTRACT. THATS THE BOTTOM LINE. I'VE NEVER OWNED A CAR THAT HAS NEEDED ANY REPAIRS EQUALLING OVER $2000 (THE MINIMUM PRICE CHARGED BY DEALERS FOR A 100K B2B WARRANTY) TO BE ABSOLUTELY HONEST THE MOST I'VE EVER PAID IS $650 IN TOTAL!!!!!! ITS A BIG RIPOFF STOP BEING FOOLED BY INSURANCE. PEOPLE THAT BUY WARRANTIES ARE THE SAME PEOPLE THAT GO TO THE CASINO EXPECTING TO WIN. THE ODDS ARE NOT IN YOUR FAVOR. STOP WASTING YOUR MONEY.

  130. Not to be the bearer of bad news but auto dealerships new and used have 10 times the amount of BBB complaints. So don't think for a second because Ford or Toyota allows this individual to sell their cars that their not lying or trying to screw you either... In actuality most large dealers have their own warranties that they self insure and most times thats what your getting for coverage. The same exact plans that the MVS people are selling you. They are all junk. Beware of the Dealership they have the most complaints of any industry on the BBB. AMAZING HUH? Ask them why dealerships aren't being scrutinized since they are by far the largest source of BBB complaints via the BBB stats for 2 years running.

  132. The card that I got was more like the notices that I get from the DMV and had the usual amount of codes and numbers that relate to nothing. I called and they were very friendly and then he passed me off to a "Supervisor" who had to "Approve my mileage" and then sent me back with the warning that I had to accept the offer right now or I would never get another warranty. They are very slick with the hi pressure but I looked them up while talking to them and found you nice people.
This one is listed as "Motor Vehicle Services" with no business address or city but mailed from Florida. The scam capitol of the world. Ghana not withstanding. Had a phone number of 1-866-238-6239 and was a "Final Notice". f only it was. I get these in one form or another for the last two years. Thats when I purchased the 2005 ford.

  133. Sounds like the issue is with the Dealerships in lieu of freely handing out personal information not the warranty company trying to stay a float in this messed up economy. I did my research instead of just heading to Google where any company is fair game to anyone! Anyway, I looked up Motor Vehicle Services on the BBB website (Better Business Bureau) www.bbb.org they have a B rating which is actually very good the company they are soliciting for American Auto Shield has been in business since 2005 and have an A+ rating with the BBB. Consumer's should be calling and complaining to there dealerships were they bought the vehicle and when you buy the vehicle make sure you have signed the privacy agreement clause if you didn't then really who's mistake is that? Don't ever depend on someone having your back do your research. The customer service rep I talked to was very friendly but there will always be a bad apple in every business. The number I received a call from was 866-226-8319.

  134. Favio (USMC, Ret.)Mon Apr 26, 02:07:00 PM MDT

I received a correspondence via mail from a company called Program Headquarters (SPD) located in 300 North Tucker, St. Louis, MO 63101, phone # 1-866-989-4639. The letter claimed that it was an official reminder for additional vehicle coverage, in which I qualified in. Then goes explaining who expensive vehicle repairs are and that this company would give me peace of mind. They even gave me an actual "ID#" in reference to my case. According to my analysis and my former line of work in the Dept of Defense, this is a SCAM/FRAUD system. The envelope that encased the letter was completely white and only had a paid U.S. Postage from St. Louis. This company does not mention nor include their actual location through address. The "program coordinator" is G. Raresh. The most comical of this letter is that they said I have purchased my vehicle approx a month ago, which in reality I purchased this vehicle 12years ago from the actual Ford Dealership. In addition, for those individuals who are bilingual in English and Spanish, this letter on the back side has a Spanish-translated version of the letter. The Spanish translation does mean anything what it says in English. In the Spanish translation it clearly states in a thin-outlined box saying that "you can choose the option to not receive preselected offer of credit, such as mentioned, and other companies by calling toll-free 1-888-567-8688." What a clue to realize this is a SCAM.
Subsequently, approx 2 days after receiving the above correspondence, I received another correspondence via mail, from Motor Vehicle Services (Ford * Lincoln * Mercury). The letter has a U.S. Postage stamp from Ft. Lauderdale, FL. In on the outside of the letter (since its one of those letters in which you have to tear off the edges along the dotted lines to open), states " REQUEST FOR IMMEDIATE ACTION - TIME SENSITIVE MATERIAL ENCLOSE. Warning: $2,000 Fine, 5 Years Imprisonment, or both for any person interfering or obstructing with delivery of this letter U.S. Mail TTT.18 U.S. Code." Inside the letter is outlined in text/block outline of my "expiration date," my "qualified coverage," a code number of your "case," and my "warranty explanation." It also states that my factory warranty has expired and that I may extend my warranty coverage on my vehicle. It states what is covered in my "platinum coverage" and "powertrain coverage." Its business hours are from Monday - Friday @ 8:00 - 8:00 CST, and Saturdays from 10:00 - 4: 00 CST (times did not include AM or PM). The phone number to this Motor Vehicle Services is 1-866-608-4868, another toll-free number. Once again, through analysis, there is not address of this "Motor Vehicle Services." Please not confuse the name for the actual Dept of Motor Vehicle (DMV) or Motor Vehicle Commission (MVC).
If you have received any letters/correspondence via mail that claim the above information or are along the same terms, please be advised this is a high potential of SCAM/FRAUD. Please collect as much information as possible by keeping these correspondences archived and turn them into the local authorities. Please explain to them your observations and/or phone calls (as aforementioned from other bloggers) in reference to these fictitious claims. Hopefully the increase of these SCAM and FRAUDULENT claims about vehicle coverage/maintenance will increase suspicion and interest that will most likely direct the attention to the proper authorities.

Of course, they wanted me to call: 1-866-238-6239 but instead did a search on phone number at "Dogpile" search engine. Big scam, this company has gone by other names like "Certified Auto Warranty Services", "Allied Warranty", Consumer Direct Warranty Services", "Consumer Motor Vehicle Services", Motor Vehicle Solutions, etc. They will gladly take your money but I'm sure pay nothing towards any repair service. Take my advice and shred any unsolicited mail.

  138. my poor wife freaked at the sight of this post card today and called them thinking they were part of BMW. She managed to figure out that something wasn't right before agreeing to pay anything but she disclosed our car's VIN in the process... are we f*cked?

    ReplyDelete
  139. No, your VIN is registered with the state, and is easily obtained. I believe this is how car manufacturers are able to contact you in the event of a recall. So, giving away your VIN isn't a huge problem--the first round of these notifications I received had my vehicle's VIN plastered all over it in an attempt to make it look official, or that it came from the dealer. Perhaps the auto warranty companies are no longer printing the VIN numbers on the cards they send in the mail. Can anyone confirm?

That's nice - as though I would have paid a bill from a company I've never even heard of. I have to say I'm a bit surprised at how busy these dirty companies are. But after pluggin in that number into google and being lead to this site, I knew I had done the right thing by destroying that card. So much for privacy.... 1-877-297-6178
    2275 First Capitol Drive
    St. Charles, MO 63301

It says at the bottom in fine print that they are "not affiliated with the DMV, Dealer, or manufacturer."

  170. I tried several ways to find some information on these cards and notices that I had received to "extend" the warranty on my recently purchased car. I turned to the bbb first. One came up with an "F" rating and was not even an affiliate of the BBB. I am not certain how I really feel about any affiliation anyway, because if you pay enough in this world, you can get anything you want anyway.
The other 3 I tried to find by doing a google by the name, nothing came up, then by the number, same thing. I tried name and number and found one that had different names.
I found this link and am glad that I took the time to investigate before I became another victim of their scam.
I would think that they are more then happy to buy any public information that they can in hopes of finding gullible people.
    Thanks again!!!

  171. I wish these people would get real jobs. How can they sleep at night preying on the deception of others. What sleazy-ness.

  173. that's one I received today, Brian, the Auto care, same address/phone number. I've been getting a lot of these since I emailed the car lot where we bought our vehicle 2 years ago to ask them a question. I've received several of them in the last 2 weeks and one says that I just bought my car 1 month ago. I wish I knew how to get them to stop sending the stupid things. I don't have a warranty so how is it about to expire? hahaha

  174. Hey guys I need your help.i bought a used a car and after a month they send me from Motor vehicles Toyota last notice... this is not a bill... I freaked out since i am not from here and dunno why do i need a warranty car. So I asked him questions and he stayed more than half an hour explaining and frightening me that it will cost me 2000$ to fix my car. I am sure at the end I asked him if I can cancel it when I want. I didn't realize he always twisted answer. Anyway i put a deposit although i don't have the money. When I called my company they said they have no relations with them and i should not do it. So when I called the other day they were very very agressive with me and I asked him several times to stop yelling and be less agressive. He said there is no refund. I told him why you made it sound it's a must and it's not....omg... he yelled and kept saying I am a liar cause i am not telling him that I called my car company and asked about them.
Anyway I freezed my credit card.
Does anyone has suggestions for me?

  175. Call the credit card company and have the charges reversed. Tell them you requested in writing and they lied and told you you were not entitled to a refund even though it says you are in the contract. They will send to the company a request for refund and then they will fight it and possibly try to charge you again. Unfortunately you also need to change your CC # and cancel the card. Some companies are good and refund, others are just outright fraudsters that try to keep your money at all costs. For future reference NEVER BUY A WARRANTY FOR ANYTHING YOU OWN. If you save your money on not buying warranties then all the money you don't waste on them will enable you to buy new stuff when it does break.

  176. Even I did get a similar notice for my brand new car..NEVER EVEN think of dialing that toll free number. All of it are spam mails

  177. I got the same notice for a certified pre-owned car that I purchased last month. I have a year remaining which came with the car, and then 2 years on top of that with an extended warranty that I bought.

Is definitely a scam. I have 3 years before all my warranties expire.

  180. Got one today. "Time Sensitive", "Respond within 5 business days", "Final Attempt to inform you that the factory warranty ... may have expired or is about to expire". I feel like these claims are in some way illegal, as they know nothing about my warranty which is no where near expiring. Phone number was 1-888-242-1777. "Direct Agent -- UAP Vehicle Division". Ugh.
